Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Celebrates 90th Anniversary
The Birmingham Airport Authority is recognizing a major milestone with festive balloons, surprise giveaways and live music as the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) celebrates 90 years of service in the Magic City. On May 31, 1931, the Birmingham Airport opened with pomp, ceremony and the greatest air show that the city had ever seen. Over the years, the airport has evolved into a catalyst for growth and economic development for the entire region and ninety years later, the magic is still flying high at BHM.
“We are very grateful for our customers, our community members and neighbors, and all those that have tirelessly worked to make BHM an easy and convenient gateway to travel through in our community over the last 90 years,” said Ronald F. Mathieu, Birmingham Airport Authority president and CEO. “We are proud to continue serving our community and we are going to work as hard as we can to exceed our customers’ expectations with improvements to the passenger experience to ensure that BHM is well-positioned to be one of the best small hub airports in the country to make a powerful economic impact to our region for years to come.”
On May 28, just before the holiday weekend, travelers flying BHM will enjoy:
- “Fly BHM” anniversary cookies
- Surprise giveaways at key touchpoints in the terminal
- Live music every Friday throughout the year
- 90th-anniversary décor around the terminal
- Special 90th-anniversary videos and spotlights on flybhm.com and social media
The Birmingham Airport Authority invites the community to join in the celebration by sharing photos and videos of their best memories at BHM to be included in special anniversary videos that will be debuted throughout the year.
