City of Albuquerque Announces New Sunport Director and Deputy Director
The City of Albuquerque named Richard McCurley director of aviation. McCurley joined the Sunport as deputy director in 2020 and has been serving as interim director since November. Additionally, Brian Boyd joins the department as deputy director of operations.
McCurley will oversee the Albuquerque International Sunport and the city’s GA airport, Double Eagle II. He aims to maintain orderly, efficient airport systems and programs, with a strong focus on safety, security and customer experience. Boyd will be responsible for aiding McCurley in oversight and management of all airport activity, which includes aircraft operations, building and field maintenance and supervising enforcement of all airport regulations.
“We’re grateful to have these experienced city leaders heading up aviation,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “This is the right team to expand service and economic development at the Sunport. We’re continuing to pursue new opportunities for our city that bring in smart growth.”
McCurley has spent more than 30 years in airport operations at both the Houston Airport System and the Albuquerque International Sunport, and most recently served as Interim Director of Aviation for the City of
Albuquerque. Under his leadership, McCurley helped guide the Sunport through COVID-19 by implementing COVID-safe protocols and maintaining the airport’s essential operations.
“I consider the Sunport to be my home, and I am eager to lead such a wonderful team of dedicated professionals in this new position,” said McCurley. “I look forward to continuing our hard work in order to achieve our goals and actualize our visions for the Sunport, paving the way for its continued growth in the aviation industry.”
Boyd has 20 years of airport operations and management experience from his time at the Houston Airport System where he worked in operations, environmental, and safety at all three Houston airports. He most recently served as the safety management systems manager for both Hobby and Ellington Airport.
“I look forward to joining the team at the Sunport, and continuing to forge a path of innovation alongside Director McCurley,” said Boyd. “I am pleased to be able to apply my knowledge and experience in aviation from my time spent at the Houston Airport System to this position.”
