Naples Airport Authority Hosts Meeting to Explore Noise Abatement Measures
The Naples Airport Authority (NAA) held a Joint Meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and Noise Compatibility Committee (NCC) on June 2, 2022, to discuss the ongoing Part 150 Noise Study. The purpose of the meeting was to share progress on noise abatement measures currently under evaluation, summarize the next steps in the Part 150 Noise Study process and receive feedback from Committee members and the public. The Part 150 Noise Study presents the best opportunity for the NAA to advocate for the community with the FAA, which has the final authority to decide on the recommended measures.
The study, which must be conducted according to FAA guidelines, is currently in the Noise Compatibility Program (NCP) phase. The NCP phase seeks public input on more than 100 previously suggested measures across three primary categories: Noise Abatement, Land Use, and Programmatic. The June 2 meeting was focused on Noise Abatement, with Land Use and Programmatic measures to be discussed in greater detail at future meetings. Suggested Noise Abatement measures are a direct result of input received from the public in prior meetings. Measures under evaluation include modifications to aircraft arrival and departure procedures, modifications to runway usage, and engine setting adjustments, among others.
Over 80 members of the public attended the June 2 joint meeting (in person or virtually) to listen and make comments. Topics raised by the public and echoed by committee members included the importance of finding practical solutions rather than shifting noise from one area of the city to another.
Outside of the study, additional solutions to reduce the impact of noise have been explored and implemented by the NAA including ways to improve curfew compliance and other noise mitigation strategies that fall within airport jurisdiction. NAA Commissioners and staff actively engage with aircraft operators, pilots and passengers to explain the importance of the voluntary curfew.
