Sacramento International Airport (SMF) has broken ground on a new 5,500 space parking garage east of Terminal B, on the site of the recently closed Hourly Lot. The state-of-the-art parking garage will include a passenger guidance system for parking, reserved parking, electric vehicle charging and desirable close-in, covered parking.
“Today’s groundbreaking is another important step to realize the SMForward vision and deliver tangible improvements for our community,” said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. “This new parking garage will greatly expand capacity while going above and beyond to make the facility convenient and technologically cutting edge. I’m proud to champion the work of our airport – and we are only continuing to push the envelope to keep it the national gold standard for years to come.”
The Terminal B parking garage is a key component of SMF’s ambitious $1.3 billion SMForward capital program, aimed at upgrading the Airport's infrastructure to meet the demands of increasing passenger traffic while enhancing customer comfort and accessibility. The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2026.
“Increasing close-in garage parking capacity is the number one opportunity we have to improve the guest experience at SMF,” said Cindy Nichol, Director, Sacramento County Department of Airports. “With passenger numbers projected to surpass 13 million this year, Sacramento International Airport is committed to meeting our travelers’ needs into the future.”
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The new parking garage will not only enhance the traveler experience at SMF, but it is also an investment in the future of the greater Sacramento region. The project will support approximately 1,000 jobs during its construction, contributing to economic growth. It will also utilize labor under a Community Workforce Training Agreement (CWTA) creating opportunities for the local workforce, supporting small businesses, and ensuring the economic benefits extend throughout the community.
The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors approved the $229 million design-build contract in July. Locally owned Otto Construction, which built the Terminal A parking garage, will be the contractor. The project has a total budget of $390 million and is a significant milestone as the first design-build project in Sacramento County’s history.
Parking Options at the Airport
During construction, passengers have a variety of parking options. Short term parking is available in the Terminal A Garage, the Daily Lot, or the East Economy lot for $2 per half hour. The Garage and Daily Lot are walkable from both terminals while the East Economy lot requires use of a shuttle. Shuttles run approximately every 30 minutes 24 hours a day. A new South Economy lot will be opening soon, providing an additional 3,000 economy spaces next to the recently opened free cell waiting area.
Travelers are encouraged to check parking availability and track shuttles in real-time before arriving at the airport.
