Houston Airports celebrates a record-breaking holiday season with more passengers, smoother traffic flow and airports improvements

HOUSTON— Houston Airports is celebrating a record-breaking holiday travel season marked by increased passenger traffic and significant reductions in roadway congestion at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). While the holiday travel period officially ends today, early data shows that from December 20 to December 30, 2024, Bush Airport welcomed 1.7 million passengers—300,000 more than during the same period in 2023.

Despite this surge in passenger traffic, Houston Airports achieved measurable improvements in traffic flow, highlighting the success of recent infrastructure upgrades, enhanced customer service strategies and operational improvements.

Traffic reductions that set a new standard
During the 11-day holiday travel period:

  • Heavy traffic periods entering Bush Airport were down 90% compared to last Christmas.
  • Severe traffic periods dropped by an impressive 99%.

Last Christmas, drivers experienced 5.4 hours of severe traffic conditions entering IAH. This year, severe traffic was reduced to 2 minutes.

Transforming the travel experience
“Our goal was to deliver a seamless journey during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “The results show that our investments in infrastructure, technology and customer service are paying off. We are proud of our team and the traveling public for working together to make this holiday season a success. Our coordinated efforts between Houston Airports and Houston Police kept traffic flowing smoothly at our departure curbs while passengers followed instructions and used cell phones lots effectively. These efforts, paired with infrastructure improvements like the new International Arrivals Curb and expanded Terminal C garage entrance, demonstrate our commitment to delivering world-class service and efficiency.”

Key enhancements made the difference
Houston Airports implemented several strategic improvements in 2024 to support holiday travelers:

  • Traffic Flow Solutions: The new IAH International Arrivals Curb, featuring seven dedicated lanes designed to reduce congestion and streamline pick-ups, opened on December 14. This was in addition to the reopening of the closed entry roadway lane prior to the Thanksgiving travel period.
  • Customer Service Expansion: Houston Airports increased the number of Landside Agents and Customer Service Representatives to direct traffic and assist passengers. They also worked closely with Houston Police and additional law enforcement to manage traffic and maintain safety.
  • Parking Reservations and Cashless Pay Systems: Introduced a cashless parking system that improved efficiency and convenience at HAS garages and ecopark.

Delivering on our promise
“Our focus is always on providing a safe, stress-free experience,” said Kelly Woodward, chief operating officer for Houston Airports. “These upgrades allowed us to accommodate record passenger numbers while keeping traffic flowing. It’s a win for travelers and our city.”

Looking ahead: Commitment to growth
Improvements at IAH continue as the new International Central Processor opens in the first of two phases. In early 2025, 11 lanes on the upper level open as United Airlines transitions Terminal E check-in operations to the new facility.

The construction projects including the IAH International Terminal, the IAH Terminal B Transformation and the HOU 7-gate expansion reflect the commitment of Houston Airports to work with stakeholders and airline partners to improve critical infrastructure while prioritizing the passenger experience with minimal disruptions during peak travel periods. Houston Airports remains focused on preserving passenger trust and leading the industry in efficiency, service and innovation.
