Stockton Metropolitan Airport Awarded $2.6M FAA Grant
Stockton Metropolitan Airport (SCK) has received notification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that it has been awarded a $2.6 million grant to rebuild and resurface the Airport’s burgeoning general aviation ramp, which accommodates the airport’s largest employers, including Atlantic Aviation.
In early 2016, airport administration conducted pavement assessments which prioritized the general aviation ramp area as being in serious need of reconstruction. As a good partner, Atlantic Aviation, Stockton Airport’s sole fixed-based operator, funded the $300,000 engineering costs which allowed the Airport to enter the current year’s federal-funding cycle. This accelerated the project by one year.
With the grant request underway, the airport began the bid process for the reconstruction of the project. The successful low bidder, George Reed Construction of Modesto, Calif., will be considered on the Aug. 9, Board of Supervisors agenda.
In January, the Board of Supervisors identified this project as one of the county’s top three transportation projects for inclusion into the 2016 San Joaquin Council of Governments One Voice Agenda. Supervisors Miller, Villapudua and Winn traveled to Washington, D.C. in April to advocate for this priority.
Chair Moses Zapien said, “This is wonderful news and shows that persistence in Washington pays off. I want to thank the Board members who took the time to help make this happen. I also want to thank Congressman Jeff Denham and Congressman Jerry McNerney who strongly advocated for this funding.”
According to Airport Director Harry Mavrogenes, “This vital improvement was fast tracked thanks to the willingness of our partner and tenant, Atlantic Aviation to frontend the engineering work.” Construction is expected to begin in mid-to-late August and take approximately four to five months to complete.
