Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport Receives Perfect FAA Inspection

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department is pleased to announce that Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (IATA code MKC) passed the 2017 Federal Aviation Administration annual certification inspection with no discrepancies.

“The safety of our airport is the utmost priority and a perfect score is a testament to this commitment,” said Airport Manager Melissa Cooper, A.A.E. “We share this milestone with our operations, maintenance and security staff, as well as our partners at the Kansas City Fire Department, Atlantic Aviation, Signature Flight Support and FAA.  It takes a team and we have solid relationships with a common goal to do it right.”

The FAA’s Part 139 inspection includes the conditions of everything on MKC’s Air Operations Area inside the security fence where aircraft operate at Downtown Airport. The AOA includes runways, taxiways, aprons and aviation tenant operational areas. Inspection items include pavement, lighting, markings, safety areas, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting training, fueling operations and Air Operations Area driver training. The evaluation found MKC to be fully compliant with Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139, the Airport Certification Manual and the Airport Operating Certificate.

The Kansas City Fire Department Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting unit plays an instrumental role in the safety of the airport. KCFD ARFF trains three “structural” companies in all required ARFF elements, including participation in an annual live burn exercise, maintaining training records to federal standards and completing hand-on response training.
