Skydiver Dies in Finger Lakes After Parachute Gets Tangled

July 29, 2019

PERRY, N.Y. -- A man died Saturday after his parachute got tangled while he was skydiving in the Finger Lakes.

Richard S. Cordero, 68, of Bergen, died in a skydiving accident in Perry, Wyoming County. He had over 45 years of skydiving experience, said the New York State Police in a news release.

After flying out of Perry-Warsaw Airport, Cordero and three others with Rochester Skydivers jumped out of a plane, troopers said. The other three skydivers landed safely. But Cordero’s parachute tangled after opening, troopers said.

Troopers responded to a cornfield off of Soper Road at 12:05 p.m. after Cordero crashed. Although troopers tried to save Cordero, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
