The first British Airways (BA) flights have touched down at King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban, South Africa on a new route from London Heathrow (LHR).

The Mayor of Durban and other dignitaries met the aircraft as it landed, along with crowds, an orchestra and traditional Zulu dancers in the terminal to celebrate the arrival.

This is the first direct route linking DUR with the United Kingdom, and offers greater flexibility for passengers travelling in and out of South Africa. The route reflects growing passenger numbers and also enhances the region’s international reputation as a hub for economic growth.

Ian van Rooyen, VP South Africa and Namibia, said: “We are really pleased to welcome three weekly flights on this new BA route to our operations here at DUR. I’m happy to say that we have already completed 4 flights to great success, and we look forward to countless more smooth turnarounds.”
