SkyNRG and Skellefteå Kraft Announce eSAF Project in Northern Sweden

Sept. 16, 2024
eSAF from Project SkyKraft will support the EU's decarbonization goals and further enhance Skellefteå’s position as Sweden’s hub for next-generation green industry, creating opportunities for the aviation industry to reach net zero emissions.

SkyNRG and Skellefteå Kraft are entering a partnership under the name Project SkyKraft, an innovative and large-scale project initiated in 2022, which will further investigate the opportunity to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from renewable electricity and biogenic CO2, known as eSAF.

This project will be among the first of its kind globally, positioning Northern Sweden as a leader in the energy transition. eSAF from Project SkyKraft will support the EU's decarbonization goals and further enhance Skellefteå’s position as Sweden’s hub for next-generation green industry, creating opportunities for the aviation industry to reach net zero emissions.

Key Advantages of Skellefteå for eSAF Production:

  • Fossil free and 100% renewable energy: Access to nearly 100% renewable energy supplied by Skellefteå Kraft from hydro and wind power, enabling continuous and cost-efficient eSAF production.
  • Competitive and strategic location: Strategically located by Skellefteå harbor, Project SkyKraft will leverage Skellefteå’s abundant renewable energy sources to support the decarbonization of the aviation industry in a competitive way. They will do this in partnership with one of Sweden’s largest producers of renewable energy.
  • Biogenic CO2 potential: Sweden holds the largest potential for biogenic CO2 in Europe - and the Skellefteå region has the industrial scale to provide it. SkyKraft requires approximately 1 percent of the biogenic CO2 currently emitted in Sweden.

The project has secured a site at the Port of Skellefteå, with a planned commencement around 2030. SkyKraft will contribute to the Municipality of Skellefteå's sustainable development goals by decarbonizing aviation. The project is simultaneously expected to create approximately 100 skilled jobs in the energy transition sector.

SkyNRG identified Skellefteå as an optimal location for eSAF production due to its abundant renewable energy and biogenic CO2. Project SkyKraft aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of eSAF. The partners plan to scale up production in the coming years.

Philippe Lacamp, CEO of SkyNRG: "It’s an exciting time for SkyNRG as we develop our portfolio of SAF projects. We are proud to be partnering with Skellefteå Kraft, as our complementary skills and shared sustainability vision make this a unique location for eSAF production. We are pleased to see the progress on this project and are committed to helping it reach completion."

Joachim Nordin, CEO of Skellefteå Kraft: "We are excited to partner with SkyNRG on this pioneering project, showcasing the potential of eFuels for aviation. This aligns with our vision of advancing renewable energy and contributing to a sustainable and fossil free society. Northern Sweden has the ideal conditions and expertise to lead the energy transition, and we are proud to be part of it."
