Global Aviation Industry Delivers Joint Declaration to ICAO on 80th Anniversary of the Chicago Convention
Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Chicago Convention, the global aviation industry presented a unified declaration to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), underscoring a shared commitment to advancing safe, secure, and sustainable growth of international aviation. Signed by major industry associations, the declaration represents a collective pledge to support ICAO’s mission and ensure that aviation continues to serve as an integral part of a thriving, connected, inclusive and affordable global transportation system for people and goods.
The Chicago Convention, signed on Dec. 7, 1944, laid the foundational framework for international civil aviation, fostering cooperation among States to promote global connectivity.
Fabio Gamba, director general of ASA World adds: "As we blow out the 80 candles on the ICAO’s cake, two distinct yet inter-related thoughts come to our mind: the first one is about making a wish, as is the custom in these circumstances, a wish that ICAO Member States and industry organisations will continue this formidable collaboration amongst them that has turned a fledgling industry 80 years ago into the safest transport mode on the planet it is today. This will turn crucial if we are to overcome the next challenges, including those related to decarbonization. The second one is that this anniversary corresponds with the granting by ICAO of the status of international organisation to ASA. We take it as a testament of the importance of the role of ground handling and ICAO can count on our unwavering support to celebrate the future milestones with us and the rest of the industry at their side.”
The declaration “Eighty years of collaboration, progress, and innovation in global aviation” highlights that today, air transport connects 5 billion passengers, 33% of global trade by value and 58 percent of world tourists across 67,300 routes to 4,072 airports on a fleet of 29,000 aircraft.
