BEUMER Group to Provide Design/Build Services for SFO's Terminal 3 Modernization Program
SOMERSET, NJ (November 12, 2019) – BEUMER Group, an international leader in the manufacture of intralogistics systems, has been selected to provide design/build services for the upgrade of San Francisco Airport’s (SFO) Terminal 3 Baggage Handling system. This latest award, the third project BEUMER has been selected to complete at SFO in the past four years, will serve United Airline's domestic operations. Currently in the design phase, construction of the baggage handling system is scheduled to begin in the second half of the 2021 calendar year. Turner Construction is serving as general contractor.
The upgrade is part of SFO’s Terminal 3 West Modernization project and includes a new TSA screening system and TSA workstations. The project will utilize BEUMER’s tote-based CrisBag technology—the first Individual Carrier System (ICS) for baggage handling to be approved by the TSA for U.S.-based, in-tote baggage screening. The CrisBag platform allows each bag to be loaded into an individually controlled tote. This allows for 100% track and trace compliance throughout the screening and loading process.
"BEUMER’s CrisBag solution allows airports to maintain the highest standards of security," said David Delaney, BEUMER's project director. "Using our solution for the Terminal 1 expansion will ensure adherence to these standards while reducing the airport’s overall operational and maintenance costs."
Terminal 1 at SFO is expected to open in early 2020.
In addition to Terminals 1 and 3, BEUMER is also performing TSA upgrades at SFO’s International Terminal. Currently, BEUMER has 28 ongoing airport projects around the world. BEUMER performs operations and maintenance for baggage systems at many international airports, including Singapore’s Changi Airport and Calgary’s International Airport.
