Orlando Airport Frets Fuel Pinch as Tanker Trucks Added, Inbound Jets Carrying Extra Fuel
With Orlando’s airport stirring national news about a pinch in fuel supply, officials said additional supplies are being brought in by truck and airlines are being told to keep their jet tanks as full as possible when inbound.
Spokesperson Carolyn Fennell said Orlando International Airport “is not out of fuel, and fuel is being delivered after extended weather issues. "
The airline tracking technology company FlightAware is showing no cancellations or delays for Orlando International Airport for Monday or Tuesday.
Spirit Airlines, the second busiest carrier at Orlando, said the only adjustment has been to load its jets with extra fuel when flying to the airport to lessen the amount of refueling there.
“We’re business as usual for scheduled service yesterday and today,” said spokesperson Erik Hofmeyer in an email.
Fennell said fuel concerns were over reserve supplies cut short by weather impacting shipping in the Gulf of Mexico. “The weather has lifted and ships have been able to depart,” she said.
The airport’s jet fuel arrives via pipelines from the Gulf coast.
Served by 33 airlines, Orlando’s airport is handling more than 950 daily takeoffs and landings, and since the pandemic has rebounded to a rate of nearly 50 million passengers annually.
