This event will test each team’s ability to complete assignments in three (3 categories) associated with hydraulics. This event will be given 20 minutes to be completed in. FPTI will judge this event. The categories to be tested in are:
1: Safety with hydraulics with an emphasis on oil injection injuries. Each team will be required to correctly answer five (5) questions about hydraulic safety.
2: Basic hydraulic theory. Each team will be required to answer five (5) questions about basic hydraulic theory.
3: Basic diagnostics with an emphasis on checking and adjusting pressures. This activity will be performed on a ¼ scale aircraft with a fully operational tricycle type hydraulic landing gear system. The problem will consist of an exemplar aircraft which is experiencing a problem with the deployment of the landing gear. The nose wheel deploys and the main gear fails to deploy.
Each team will be scored on their ability to:
A: use the landing gear hydraulic schematic to analyze the problem.
B: Select and install the correct instrumentation needed to analyze the system.
C: Test the system to determine if the suspect valve(s) are set at the correct pressure(s) as prescribed on the hydraulic system schematic which will be provided.
D: If necessary, set the valve(s) at the correct pressure(s).

3. Study Basic Hydraulics Theory with an emphasis on series and parallel circuits.
4. Study the types of pressure control valves and their applications. Also how to correctly
set pressure control valves using the appropriate instrumentation.
5. Study ANSI/ISO graphic symbols.
