Spirit Airlines adds competition for the Oakland-to-Las Vegas vacation dollar

Aug. 19, 2011

Travelers planning a quick Las Vegas getaway have another low-cost flight option now that Spirit Airlines has added Oakland International Airport as a hub.

Spirit launched its service between Oakland and Las Vegas on Thursday, offering $17 fares on certain flights beginning Saturday through Sept. 21.

Rosemary Barnes, Oakland airport spokeswoman, said Terminal 1 had a festive air as dozens of people took advantage of the inaugural flight. "We hope they'll add flights to other destinations from Oakland in the future and see the benefit of using Oakland as their gateway to the Bay Area," Barnes said.

Spirit offers 175 daily flights throughout the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. The carrier offers service from Los Angeles to Chicago and the East Coast, and is scheduled to begin service between San Diego and Las Vegas starting Sept. 7.

In Oakland's Terminal 1, Spirit joins Volaris Airlines and Allegiant Airlines. Volaris offers nonstop flights to Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Allegiant Airlines, which relocated from San Francisco International to Oakland in February 2010, offers flights between Oakland and Eugene, Ore., and Bellingham, Wash.
