Mar. 12--American Airlines has rolled out paperless, mobile boarding passes at 19 airports including Memphis International Airport.
The technology saves passengers time by eliminating the need for a paper boarding pass. American and its regional airline operate 10 flights daily out of Memphis.
Delta Air Lines, the airport's biggest, has had mobile boarding passes at Memphis for more than a year, after electronic barcode readers were installed at security checkpoints.
Paperless boarding uses mobile technology to generate a barcode encrypted with a passenger's flight and security information. An electronic link, e-mailed to cell phones and hand-held computers, generates flight information and a multicolored, geometrically shaped barcode.
