Combating Terrorism with Commercial Technology: 2009 Force Protection Equipment Demonstration
WASHINGTON , April 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 3,200 items of commercially available off-the-shelf equipment for combating terrorism will be displayed during the 2009 Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED VII) at Stafford Regional Airport, Stafford, VA , and Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA , during May 19-21 .
Uniformed and civilian members of the Department of Defense, personnel with physical security responsibilities in other federal departments and agencies, state and local law enforcement officers and other first-responders, and corrections agency personnel are invited to attend FPED VII. All attendees must register. Online registration is available at: http://www.fped7.org
Equipment displays for the event will be presented in 600 exhibits at the airport, while equipment protective capabilities, and survivability when hit by live fire and high explosives, will be observed by attendees at ordnance ranges on the base at Quantico . Items presented at the demonstration have been designed to reduce vulnerabilities to many types of terrorist threats, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and to enhance the overall security of U.S. and allied personnel, infrastructure and equipment -- both in combat operations and homeland security. The IED defeat equipment and systems will be among hundreds of other threat defeat/reduction items from within 20 equipment categories presented at FPED VII. All items demonstrated must be available for procurement and testing within 90 days of the event.
Attendees can expect to see ground robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles, seismic and infrared sensors, K-9 demonstrations, night-vision equipment, and a broad spectrum of other products for use in combating terrorism through enhanced force protection.
The FPED was initiated by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a result of the bombing at Khobar Towers, in Saudi Arabia , in 1996. He determined there was a need to stay abreast of new counter-terrorism technology by periodically reviewing new or improved equipment available for immediate purchase and employment. The Force Protection Equipment Demonstrations respond to that need and have been held every two years since FPED I in 1997.
The FPED is not a commercial trade show. It is produced by the U.S. Army Product Manager, Force Protection Systems, under sponsorship of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics; the Department of Energy; the Department of Homeland Security; the Joint Staff; the National Institute of Justice; the National Nuclear Security Administration; and the Technical Support Working Group.
The Force Protection Equipment Demonstration is not open to the general public. It is open only to Department of Defense personnel, members of other federal agencies, law enforcement and other first-responder personnel, and media representatives who cover defense, law enforcement and other first-responder operations, management and training. Additional information is available at the event web site: http://www.fped7.org
