Comparing airport taxi fares

Oct. 11, 2007

Because of incorrect information provided to a reporter, a story on the front page Wednesday gave a wrong metered taxi fare. The fare is $2.25 for the first one-eighth of a mile.

Starting around Thanksgiving, taking a cab from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to Public Square, about 13 miles, will cost you more than $40. New flat fees, including a $3 surcharge, will replace fares of $2.25 for the first 1/6 of a mile and $2 for each additional mile.

Here are the rates at some other airports:

Akron-Canton Regional Airport

Akron Canton Taxi, one of several companies at the airport, charges $2.50 to get into the cab and has metered fares starting at $2.15 a mile, depending on the distance of the trip. The company vows on its Web site to beat or match quotes from competitors.

Detroit Metro Airport

Metro Airport Taxi, which has an exclusive contract to pick up at the airport, charges an initial fee of $4, plus a metered rate of $1.65 a mile. There is a $13 minimum. A 20-plus mile ride to downtown Detroit costs about $41.

Port Columbus International Airport

All cabs must charge the same rate of $2.75 plus about $2 for each additional mile and a $3 surcharge. A 7-mile ride to downtown Columbus runs about $22.
