BRIEF: New passport rules take effect

Oct. 3, 2007

Oct. 1--Travel agents are reminding airline passengers headed to or from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or non-U.S. Caribbean islands that, starting today, you need a passport, not just proof of an application. The State Department temporarily lifted its requirement on passports in June after falling behind in processing applications.

The grace period has ended, although you can return to this country with just proof of an application.
