Sep. 17--United Airlines parent UAL Corp. said Monday afternoon that the Federal Aviation Administration named Henry "Hank" Krakowski -- United's vice president of flight operations -- to serve as the FAA's chief operating officer.
People familiar with the FAA's position had indicated last week that the widely respected Krakowski was on the short list to fill the currently vacant COO spot at the Washington-based aviation agency.
Among other things, the FAA's chief operating officer is responsible for overseeing the FAA's air-traffic control organization.
The chief operating post, which has traditionally been filled by an airline industry veteran, has been vacant since longtime American Air operations expert Russell Chew resigned in March to take a position with JetBlue Airways.
Krakowski, a Boeing 737 captain and a former official with the pilots union, has been with United since 1978. Since August of 2006, he has been serving as the airline's vice president in charge of flight operations.
