For the past 13 years, the Way-Point Cafe has been a welcome respite for weary and hungry private pilots flying into the Camarillo Airport. But word of mouth led to a strong reputation for good service and delicious food, and the flying community wasn't able to keep the laid-back cafe a secret for long.
"We believe in good food and good service," said Kathy Mills, who owns the cafe with her husband, Mike. "That is what brings people back. I insist on quality. It's very important to me that people come in here and get a good meal."
Nowadays, you're just as likely to see a businessman saddle up to a stool at the diner-style counter as you are a pilot.
"We draw from the whole community, not just the aviation community and the airport," Mills said. "Everyone from regular citizens to local farmers come by."
In fact, over the years there have been a few celebrity sightings among the diners. Customers in the know are quick to brag that actors Harrison Ford and Kurt Russell have dropped by for a bite to eat.
But it's the loyal regulars who are the lifeblood of Way-Point Cafe. Customers like Somis private pilot Bill Peterson, who claims to have stopped in just about every day for the past eight years.
"I get the special every day, or I just get my old standby of ham and eggs," Peterson said over breakfast recently.
While ham and eggs may have their fans, any waitress at the cafe will tell you the most popular item on the menu is the tri-tip. It's the house specialty.
"The guys from Point Mugu are always here on Wednesdays because they love our tri-tip," Mills said of the ubiquitous military pilots from the nearby naval air station.
So don't panic the next time you see a Los Angeles Police Department or Ventura County Sheriff's Department helicopter pacing you as you drive Highway 101 through Camarillo. It could just be the tri-tip they're after.
