A 747 Carrier of 787 Cargo Makes Debut

Sept. 19, 2006
The plane's enlarged interior can accommodate three times the cargo volume of a standard 747-400.

The first of Boeing's bulging 747 superfreighters, modified to ferry large 787 sections from their manufacturers around the globe, touched down at Boeing Field Saturday. By early next year, Boeing will need three such planes flying in and out of Everett's Paine Field to deliver the half-dozen major sections of 787 jets that will be assembled locally by company employees.

Boeing employees and relatives of the crew greet the plane.

The plane's enlarged interior can accommodate three times the cargo volume of a standard 747-400, according to Boeing, and its tail swings open to allow whole 787 fuselage segments to slide in.
