United Airlines is closing a reservation call center in the Washington D.C. area that employs more than 400 people.

County officials were notified last week that the call center in Sterling, Va., would close Oct. 16, about the same time United will begin adding flights at Washington Dulles International Airport. About 450 jobs will be eliminated at the call center, United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said Thursday. Employees will be given an opportunity to transfer to other call centers or apply for positions opening at Dulles airport.

Urbanski said the decision reflects the growing number of customers who book travel online.

United parent UAL Corp. is adding nearly 500 new jobs at Dulles over the coming months, including flight attendants, customer service staff and baggage handlers.

Last week, United said it would 22 new flights at Dulles by November, to a total of 321 daily flights.

JetBlue Airways Corp. and Southwest Airlines Co. are also beginning service at Dulles.
