Strange Conduct at Airport Lands Man in Jail

The man, who had a bottle of liquor with him, was not allowed to board.

Roberto Jolly apparently had a plane to catch but ended up in jail, in part because of four flat tires. According to police reports, Jolly tried to board a Southwest Airlines flight out of Manchester-Boston Regional Airport Wednesday evening. Jolly, who had a bottle of liquor with him, was not allowed to board at that time because airline employees thought he was drunk, according to the arrest affidavit.

He later walked up to a Londonderry police officer patrolling the airport, inexplicably gave him the unused boarding pass and walked away. The Westford, Mass., resident later wound up at the nearby Hertz automobile rental garage, where he found a Ford Taurus with the keys inside. Police said the 43-year-old Jolly did not have any rental agreements with the company. Jolly rode the car through the parking lot and then tried to exit through the entrance. Because the entrance is equipped with spikes that allow only one-way traffic, all four of the car's tires were immediately flattened. Jolly then left the car there, police said. Police said Jolly later found a silver Volvo sedan parked at the same parking lot and drove it around, although he did not try to leave the lot with the car. Londonderry Police Capt. William Hart said he believed the car was privately owned. According to the arrest affidavit, Jolly was later found at the McDonald's inside the airport. Police said Jolly resisted arrest, swearing at them and throwing himself to the ground. In the police car, the agitated Jolly called one officer a "cowboy" and tried to get out of his seatbelt. He was later charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and taking a car without permission. Jolly was sentenced Thursday in Derry District Court to a week in jail in the Rockingham County Jail for the charge of resisting arrest. The other two charges were placed on file without a finding for now, according to court officials.
