Construction crews have broken ground on Bartow, Fla., Municipal Airport's new $7.1 million terminal.
Barring any hurricanes or other construction headaches, airport employees will be moving in come January.
The single-story, 20,000-square-foot building will sit at the apex of the city-owned airport's runways, allowing employees a sweeping view as airplanes take off and land.
The state Department of Transportation appropriated $4 million for the terminal and Bartow city commissioners agreed to pay $900,000. The Federal Aviation Administration is kicking in $800,000 for a new aircraft apron.
Prices soared after that, and bids for the project came in much higher, leaving officials to come up about $1.4 million to balance the project budget. The Airport Authority decided to push ahead with the project, committing airport funds to cover any cost overruns.
