LONDONDERRY (AP) -- The Manchester-Boston Regional Airport has given the town $45,000 to start a hiring search for more than 20 new police officers to add to airport security.
Town Manager Dave Caron said the agreement was the first official step toward allowing the town to take over airport security from the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department.
The money probably will be used to run background checks on the applicants.
The airport's security contract with Rockingham County expires June 30. Director Kevin Dillon has said the review committee was leaning toward choosing Londonderry as the new airport security provider.
Londonderry is expected to hold a contract similar to the one between the airport and the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department. Under that contract, more than $1 million in new police hires would need to be made in town and the airport would pay for the salaries, benefits, vehicles, uniforms and equipment for all of the new hires in Londonderry.
The town also would receive more than $100,000, 10 percent of the cost of newly hired officers and their benefits from the airport as part of an administrative fee.
