SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a grant exceeding $1.5 million for improvements at the Chippewa County International Airport.
The funds will pay for an emergency generator, new lighting and pavement upgrades, The Evening News reported Monday.
''This grant is focused on resurfacing the airport's main runway,'' airport manager Kathy Noel said. ''We are rehabilitating pavements which deteriorate over time; our runway was installed by the military in the early 1950s and has been untouched since the base closed in 1977.''
Additional funds will go to the county to boost security.
Federal grants also were awarded to Houghton County Memorial Airport and Sawyer International Airport.
