FedEx has 80 flights a day to the Indianapolis outlet, and the project will increase the company's space by 600,000 square feet.

A $214 million expansion of FedEx's Indianapolis hub will add 800 mostly part-time jobs, officials from the shipping company said Thursday.

The 18-year-old operation, adjacent to the Indianapolis International Airport, is FedEx's second-largest domestic hub behind its headquarters in Memphis, Tenn. The airport will contribute $50 million to the project, which the company will pay back.

Hiring was expected to begin in 18 months. When the expansion is done, the Indianapolis hub will have 5,000 employees, FedEx said.

"To me, Indianapolis is all about location. The airport has a large amount of land to grow," said Robert Palmer, a FedEx vice president.

He also said the operation could expand more as the company continues to grow.
