Mumbai CSIA's T2 terminal to accommodate 40 million passengers per annum

With an aim to enhance capacity of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), the Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) is in the process of completing the integrated passenger terminal T2 at Sahar. Scheduled to be completed by financial year 2013-14, the new integrated terminal will be able to accommodate 40 million passengers per annum and will cater to both domestic and international passengers.

With an aim to enhance capacity of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), the Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) is in the process of completing the integrated passenger terminal T2 at Sahar. Scheduled to be completed by financial year 2013-14, the new integrated terminal will be able to accommodate 40 million passengers per annum and will cater to both domestic and international passengers.

A MIAL spokesperson informed that T2 will be a state-of-the-art four level integrated passenger terminal with an area of over 4,39,000 sq metres and will include new taxiways and apron areas for aircraft parking too. Some of the key features of the terminal building include: 184 check-in counters, 14 reclaim belts, the terminal will be able to accommodate 9,900 passengers during peak hours and 700,000 SF of retail space, F&B, lounges and travel services. "T2 will have a blend of retail and services offerings which is being inspired by the best international brands and rich diversity of India," added the spokesperson. Talking about the number of passengers handled by the airport last year and this year, as well as the flights that operate from the airport on a daily basis, MIAL spokesperson said, "CSIA catered to 29.1 million passengers between April 2010 - March 2011 and 25.6 million passengers between April 2009 - March 2010. Presently, 41 airlines and five freighter airlines operate from the international airport and seven airlines and two freighter airlines operate from the domestic airport." With GVK acquiring 13.5 per cent stake in MIAL for Rs 1,140 crore, when asked on how is the group looking at further consolidating its position in the airport business, the spokesperson added, "Our capabilities, expertise and strong track record in the airports sector with both Mumbai and Bengaluru airports is well established in India. Going forward, we will continue to look at feasible opportunities for airport development in India and globally as and when the opportunities arise."
