New Information: Mechanic Sucked Into Jet Engine

Jan. 18, 2006

KFOX has new information on the victim of a horrific accident at El Paso International Airport.

El Paso police have identified the victim as 64-year-old Donald Gene Buchanan.

Buchanan was killed Monday morning when he was sucked into the jet engine of a Continental Airlines jet about to depart El Paso.

Buchanan was working as a contract mechanic for Continental.

KFOX spoke with a professor of mechanical engineering at UTEP who tried to explain what may have caused the tragic accident.

"Obviously the only way that could happen is if someone revved the motor or accelerated the motor and I mean basically what you got there is a hurricane in front of that motor, you know hurricanes are 100 miles an hour. You're going to have that same amount of air flowing through that motor," said Gary Hawkins, a professor in UTEP's Mechanical Engineering Department.

"Mr. Buchanan he was a very nice man and he was always real polite and he would stop by and talk to us periodically," said Barbara Lino, a neighbor of the victim.

El Paso police and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident to see if El Paso International Airport needs to change any procedures.
