In the midst of the jubilation about Republicans winning seats in Congress, let us not forget…
Do you remember the Contract With America that swept Republicans into seats back in the early 1990s, when Clinton was in office? Republicans were jubilant then, too.
Do you remember what happened thereafter? My opinion—and that of many others—is that the Republicans forgot about the Contract. They failed to follow that age-old adage, “Dance with the girl what brung you.â€
The Republicans simply failed to live up to their promises, and went back to business as usual—and they lost those seats. Now, once again, the Republicans have taken back many of those seats. Do you think they will remember how they lost those seats after the Contract With America? I certainly hope so.
Or, is it to be déjà vu all over again?
One difference this time is that the Tea Party Movement is determined to hold Republican feet to a red-hot fire. We have seen this already. Let us hope they can do so.
All too often incoming winners seem to feel it is now their turn to scoff up all the pork and other seedy perks. Is it too much to hope that this time will be different?
I think the mantra of the Republicans should be “Remember the Contract With America.â€
