SULPHUR SPRINGS, TEXAS, JULY 27, 2013 – American Legend Aircraft Company announced today its Super Legend has completed structural testing to meet S-LSA certification. The Super Legend is a Lycoming-powered version of the Legend Cub. It was designed to enthrall and delight recreational flyers of the wildly popular Cub airframe.
In development since 2011, the Super Legend airframe was designed to match to the higher performing Lycoming IO-233 engine. Features include a flapped wing, balanced tail feathers, and new carbon fiber components. The Super Legend sports an adjustable forward seat and folding rear seat to improve access to an enhanced baggage compartment. Adding amenities and maintaining weight limits of S-LSA certification resulted in a unique combination of features and performance on the Super Legend.
All Legend Cub models are based on classic Cub designs yet incorporate modern improvements. The cabin is three inches wider and clamshell doors appear on both sides of the fuselage. An electrical system includes a starter/alternator to powers radios, electronic flight displays, autopilots, and more. The Legend Cub and Super Legend remain true to the original in terms of performance, reliability and authenticity.
No modern Cub comes close to the price/performance of the Super Legend. Its flying characteristics can be expressed as pure Sport Pilot fun. Comparing favorably to classic aircraft that remain in service today, often the subject of restoration, a Super Legend has all the advantages of being new with the authenticity of a true Cub. It’s as close to the original as they come, yet thoroughly modern in its construction and amenities.
Structural load testing of the Super Legend resulted in an airframe that fits within S-LSA limits of 1,320 lbs. GTOW. It’s an aggressive performer, maxing out the Cub’s wing speed profile while remaining true to its low-and-slow heritage. The same airframe, fully welded, will be available in kit form and can be certified to 1,750 lbs. GTOW.
The Super Legend is the ideal aircraft for adventure pilots looking for realistic, extra performance without power setting limitations. It sports an airy feel from the cabin with a L-4-style greenhouse, offering unrivaled visibility from both seats. The Super Legend was designed as a ready-to-fly S-LSA and is also available as an amateur-built kit.
Super Legend pricing starts at $146,800. Production is currently underway with the first three aircraft slated for delivery. Delivery slots for three additional aircraft are available in 2013. Orders must be placed by the end of AirVenture to ensure 2012 pricing—yes, that’s 2012. American Legend Aircraft will be exhibiting at AirVenture Oshkosh 2013 in booth number 395, between Phillips 66 Plaza and the Vintage Red Barn.
American Legend Aircraft Company manufactures the Legend Cub and Super Legend—both FAA-certified aircraft for sport, recreation and training. These aircraft are powered by proven Continental and Lycoming engines. Available options include floats, tundra tires, ballistic parachute, glass panel, autopilot, and more. Legend Cub kit aircraft allow amateur builders to create and fly their own custom version of a Cub. Kit models can be certified to 1,750 GTOW and offer a variety of powerplant and configuration options.
