When Ely Luna moved to Wichita, KS from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, there were several industry choices, however, aviation stood out as it holds a long and impactful history in Wichita that expands worldwide. “The aviation industry offers a myriad of development opportunities such as manufacturing, international sales, and quality assurance, which have allowed me to develop a diverse business acumen,” says Luna. “I have been fortunate enough to engage several mentors to explore new opportunities, such as international sales, that have been instrumental in my career development. Greg Piland, vice-president of Lee Aerospace, and Jim Lee, owner and president of Lee Aerospace, continue to provide support and encouragement along this journey.”
Luna began her aviation career working with the manufacture of aviation transparencies. She quickly moved into the repair and installation of aircraft windows, where she learned the technical skills to earn the position of chief inspector. “Most of my aviation based training has been on the job, but I received my collegiate education in Mexico. My position of chief inspector was attained through a rigorous development process that included quality assurance, manufacturing processes, and repair and installation experience,” she explains.
Lee Aerospace is a member of many trade organizations, including NBAA. As a team member, Luna leverages the vast network of aviation professionals in EAA, GAMA, NBAA and other organizations to share ideas and experiences. She regularly participates in NBAA events, including regional maintenance and the national conferences and has also participated in several aviation shows throughout Latin America. As part of Lee Aerospace’s commitment to professional development, Luna has been a guest speaker at several shows for inspection of aviation transparencies.
“I regularly participate in various service organizations, such as the Rotary Club, where I have a strong platform for engaging with other young professionals and sharing my story about overcoming a cultural and language barrier to achieve a leadership position in the aviation industry,” she notes. “I have been fortunate to work for an empowering organization that encourages professional development.”
As for the future, Luna would like to take on more leadership and expand her focus to other aspects of the industry. Specifically, she would like to increase her international sales experience and technical knowledge.
