2024 AMT Top 40 Under 40: Joel Robins

Aug. 20, 2024

Joel Robins thrives in solving challenging problems, often using creative solutions when the situation dictates. He has a reputation for going above and beyond, willing not only to teach individuals but also to roll up his sleeves and get “in the trenches” with them. He lives by the motto: “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for life.” This virtue garners the respect of his subordinates, peers, and executive leadership. Rising from a mechanic to a director, Robins always remembers and builds from his roots.

“The success of others drives me to succeed. Contributing to the development and growth of others is the most rewarding part of my career,” Robins said. “The more I succeed, the more knowledge I can pass down and the more opportunities I can provide others.”

Robins started his career at AAR in 2011 as a maintenance mechanic in Indianapolis, IN. He quickly moved to a Sheet Metal Technician role, where he honed his skills. His interest in understanding the full circle of the MRO world led him to AAR in Rockford, IL, where he was promoted to Associate Engineer. His manager then requested his promotion to Manager of Projects and later to Manager of Programs. Currently, Robins serves as Sr. Director, Contracts. In ten years, he advanced from an entry-level mechanic to Director of Programs, continuously investing in himself to become a better person and leader.

Robins participates in numerous leadership classes and, with his extensive knowledge, is the go-to person. He acknowledges that he doesn’t know everything and appreciates feedback, owning his mistakes and always striving to improve. Robins lives the company value of “Quality First, Safety Always.” He loves to share his experiences and steps up when needed, always willing to offer a helping hand.

He challenges himself and the team to find solutions, demonstrating proactiveness and forethought. Despite his busy schedule, Robins invests in himself by taking online courses to grow in areas he identifies as needing improvement. He promotes the aviation industry by mentoring within the company’s mentorship program and participating in the intern program. His dedication and motivation have resulted in interns choosing to work directly under his leadership.
