Singapore Airlines Confirms Weekly Route to Australia's Capitol

The scheduled, four day a week, flights will give Canberra its first regular international flights.

As reported by BBC, Singapore Airlines (SIA) has confirmed it is to start flying direct to Canberra International Airport in Australia. SIA will fly four times a week to Canberra and on to Wellington, New Zealand. Previously the Canberra Airport mainly received private or chartered flights, but this development will be the first time that Australia and New Zealand’s capitols are linked by a nonstop flight.

Canberra's curfew-free status meant it was the only airport that would allow a chartered flight to leave for an international destination at the appropriate time.

Canberra airport was privatized in 1998 when the Capital Airport Group, headed by prominent local businessman Terry Snow, purchased it. Snow and his group invested billions of dollars into the airport since purchasing it, with the hopes of converting it into an international airport.

The route, which is subject to statutory approval, will significantly cut travel time between Australia and New Zealand and Asia, and is expected to boost tourism.

However aviation experts have said there is likely only space for one carrier to operate.
