DFW Airport Is Adding Toys R Us, Lego to Its Retail Store Mix

May 4, 2023

DFW International Airport is entering deals with rebound brand Toys R Us and kid-favorite Lego to open stores at the world’s second-busiest airport.

It will be the first Toys R Us location in an airport, occupying space at Gate A28 in Terminal A. Toys R Us, acquired by WHP Global in March 2021, is refocusing its business model on store-within-a-store and airport locations following a bankruptcy in 2017. The deals are subject to board approval at the May 4 meeting.

Toys R Us stores are featured mostly in Macy’s department stores, with flagship locations in Atlanta, Chicago and Honolulu. The company is also in Dubai and over 30 countries. The new DFW store will be in a former GNC location. GNC exited the airport in September 2020 as a result of the pandemic.

DFW’s new Lego store will be at Gate D20 in Terminal D. The first Lego store in a U.S. airport opened in December 2020 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Other airports with Lego stores are John F. Kennedy Airport, Gatwick Airport, Miami Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.

Lego has about 731 branded stores in over 50 countries across the world. The new location will be based out of a former location for Aveda, Jo Malone and MAC, which closed in November 2019.

The airport is also considering a lease with DFW Sunglasses LLC to operate a new sunglass store. It’ll feature brands like Michael Kors, Ray Ban and Oakley. It’ll operate at the same location as Lego, an about 2,000-square-foot space, but with a wall dividing the two.

Zenola Campbell, vice president of concessions at DFW Airport, told board members on May 2 that sunglasses are a retail growth category.

“Folks have shed their masks and they’re back to wearing sunglasses,” Campbell said.

Duty Free Americas, a travel retailer, will operate all three locations.
