HMSHost Australia Announces the Development of Its First Oporto Restaurant at Cairns Airport

Sept. 9, 2019
Oporto’s opening marks the first of eight anticipated dining options at Cairns Airport.

HMSHost Australia has announced the opening of a new dining concept, Oporto, on Sep. sixth at Terminal two Domestic Cairns Airport.

“The opening of Oporto marks the launch of a new phase of the Cairns Airport redevelopment at the upgraded T2 Domestic terminal. We are thrilled to continue our journey with Cairns Airport and the local Cairns community. We have been operating at the airport since 1996 and have always felt we have played our part in making this airport a success story. We are proud to bring this Aussie favourite to the airport and introduce Oporto to all passengers and airport visitors in Tropical North Queensland,” explains David Mackay, regional managing director HMSHost Asia Pacific.

Norris Carter, CEO of Cairns Airport also adds; “We are delighted to welcome Oporto to Cairns Airport and Far North Queensland. This is a first for our region, as the first Oporto to open in Cairns and it’s also the first new food outlet to open in the Departure Lounge, as part of our T2 Domestic Terminal Upgrade. Cairns Airport is excited that this newest venture with HMSHost will offer our passengers more international dining options.”

Oporto aims to bring an adventure of flavours for travellers and local guests in Cairns with its authentic Portuguese heritage and Australianinfluenced fare. Known for unique fresh-notfrozen, grilled-not-fried, Flame Grilled Chicken, burgers and wraps with the legendary Original Chilli Sauce. Oporto’s much-loved Bondi burgers pay homage to the first Oporto restaurant at Bondi Beach back in 1986.

Speaking about the opening, CEO of Oporto Craig Tozer said, “Partnering with such a premium organisation as HMSHost is another step in Oporto ensuring we provide our customers with a premium experience. We look forward to launching our partnership with HMSHost with a new Oporto restaurant at T2 Cairns airport.”

Oporto Cairns Airport also brings a youthful and lively touch of the Portuguese street scene into the overall area. The design evokes a fresh and vibrant mixture of imagery teamed with signature ceramic tiles, an elevated version of Azulejo; Spanish and Portuguese painted tin-glazed ceramic tiles.

Oporto’s opening is the first step in realizing eight dining concepts to be developed by HMSHost Australia within the Cairns Airport redevelopment project. This first successful opening will be followed by the development of a number of exciting global and local brands with planned openings through the remainder of 2019 and during 2020.
