Astrophysics Inc. announced it deployed and installed X-ray scanners for inspecting employees and visitors entering the sterile area at a prominent south Florida airport. Astrophysics' XIS-6040 units will inspect employees' hand-carried items, such as toolboxes, passing through new security checkpoints built within a maintenance hangar.
This enhanced security is critical in light of recent incidents involving airport employees, including the December 2014 arrest of an airline baggage handler at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) for gun smuggling. The Astrophysics inspection technology will include software features designed to assist the operators with the detection of prohibited items such as firearms and improvised explosive devices.
"We are extremely proud to help mitigate the risk to aviation employees and assets with our X-ray inspection technology," stated Francois Zayek, CEO of Astrophysics. "As we have seen from several recent global aviation security events, the insider threat is real and we are pleased to be adding an additional layer of security."
