CLEVELAND, Ohio – The International Women’s Air & Space Museum’s “Dinner with a Slice of History” program this month will focus on “Researching Black Women in Aviation: Barriers & Breakthroughs.”

The program features Air Force Lt. Col. (retired) and cultural historian Monica Smith. The event will be in person and via Zoom.

Dinner is at 6 p.m., and the program starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 25.

Pioneering aviator Bessie Coleman’s barnstorming in the 1920s inspired other African Americans to earn pilot licenses and take to the skies. Smith will discuss the research challenges to

document and share the stories of these women. In 1921, Coleman became the first African-American woman, and first woman of Native-American descent, to earn a pilot’s license.

Tickets are $25 ($15 for IWASM members). Virtual tickets are by minimum $5 donation. In-person tickets include boxed dinner. The museum also will offer a bundle for tickets and discounted one-year membership for $55.

Registration is required via www.iwasm.org or call 216-623-1111. Deadline is Friday, March 18. For questions, call or email [email protected].

The non-profit museum is tucked inside the terminal building of Burke Lakefront Airport, 1501 N Marginal Road, Cleveland.

The program is supported through a grant from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. March is Women’s History Month.
