Dec. 19, 2022

At least 36 people were injured after a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu encountered “severe turbulence” on Sunday, authorities said.

According to WPXI, the severe turbulence occurred about 30 minutes before the plane landed in Honolulu Sunday. It was reported that some of the passengers were sent flying out of their seats, including one passenger who hit the ceiling.

In a statement from Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, a call came in around 11 a.m. Sunday saying first responders treated about 36 patients. Twenty of those patients were transported for additional medical treatment. Eleven people were in serious condition and nine were reportedly in stable condition.

Among those transported to the hospital was a 14-month-old child, CNN reported.

Passengers were treated by paramedics and emergency technicians for injuries including serious head injuries, cuts, bruises and loss of consciousness.

Hawaiian Airlines said that the plane was carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew members. It also said the plane landed safely just before 11 a.m.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, according to CNN.
